Kevin Pieterson New England Captain

Hi all

I guess you know by now KP has been appointed England captain, after Vaughan stepped down yesterday.

Just wondered what everyone's thoughts are? Personally I don't have a problem with it. I would have liiked to have seen a complete outsider given the job, someone liike Robert Key of Kent, but it could be a good move.

Re: Kevin Pieterson New England Captain

I disagree to a point Paul.

The problem I think England have is that they feel like they need a specialist captain like Mike Brearley was but it is my belief that they should adopt the Australian approach of picking the best eleven players and picking the leader from within that eleven.

Kevin Pietersen fits this bill as he is guaranteed a place in both the test and one day sides which you can't really say about anyone else.

He will lead from the front with weight of runs and personality and I for one wish him every success in the role.

I agree that Rob Key would make a very good leader and there is a good chance that he could be a great player in the team too but would need to re-establish himself first.
An average of 31 in test cricket isn't good enough but he may get a chance to correct that.

Re: Kevin Pieterson New England Captain

It's a good point, but never underestimate how important a good captain is. Not so much in the One Day games/20-20 games, as they are quite formulaic (i.e. you open wiith your two seamers, your 2 spinners get through the middle 20 overs and bring your seamers back at the end, and the field is pretty much set for you with the fielding restrictions)

However in a test match, the captain can be the difference between winning and losing a game. You have to work to get your wickets, and an inspired field change/bowling change can be the difference. Not sure if KP has that cricket knowledge about him yet.

Having said that, he is in a good position because he will (presumably) have Strauss, Flintoff and even Bell to an extent alongside him, all experienced campaigners.

And lest we forget that KP has played under the best Australian captain there never was in Shane Warne, who was himself very inventive.

It could work, who knows, but my guess he has a lot of learning to do and quickly.

Key on the other hand, has transformed Kent from a pretty average County side into a title contending one.

We shall see. Good luck to the fella, if he succeeds then great, because i think one thing he does bring is an in-your-face attitude, and England haven't had a captain likw that for a long time, wheras SA have Smith, who is the most in your face man you can get,  Australia have Ponting, who is never short of standing up for himself.

KP is a character, and if it is a succesful appointment, then England could be a force, but i fear he will be found out, to start with in the sub continent, and later next year in the Ashes.

Re: Kevin Pieterson New England Captain

Good points chaps:)

I reckon its a big risk by england, and one they did not need to take:ohmy:

I am not saying he wont be a success, but better way to do it would have been for strauss to take over as test captain, and kp to take over the limited overs role.

That way KP could learn the ropes of captaincy ...and his own approach, then with this experiencve under his belt, he would be better placed to take over as test captain in the future .

Re: Kevin Pieterson New England Captain

When a batsman is just that, he only has to consider his own performance, but when made captain, batting and/or bowling always suffer, due to extra considerations; Michael Vaughan, a case in point.
